DisOrient, a social justice film festival dedicated to deconstructing the media stereotypes of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans as “Orientals,” is teaming up with APANO! Join us in Portland’s Academy Theater for for a summer double feature of “Pamanhikan” and “It Runs in the Family”!
“Pamanhikan”; a comedic short film that tells the story of an interracial gay couple’s parents meeting for the first time before their wedding. “Pamanhikan” is an old-fashioned Filipino tradition where the parents of the groom ask for the bride’s hand in marriage in front of her family. "It Runs in the Family" tells the story of a young gay Filipino-Canadian artist, Jay Cabalu along with his sister Joella who travel from Vancouver, Canada to Oakland, California to Manila, Philippines to meet their other queer relatives. The film is an intimate exploration on acceptance and what the modern queer family can be in the Filipino diaspora. View the trailer here.
DisOrient is driven by the belief in the power of film-as-art to educate, heal, and improve the lives of people by giving voice to their experiences. Started in 2006 by artists, educators, and activists, DisOrient is a grassroots and volunteer-run film festival committed to presenting honest portrayals of the diversity of the Asian and Pacific Islander American experience. When selecting new and exciting films for our festival, we use the W.E.B. DuBois standard of "for us, by us, or about us."
The DisOrient Film Screening is part of MicCheck! A Summer Cultural Event Series that utilizes the arts to illuminate pressing issues faced by APIs. The series amplifies voices of APIs whose stories are often silenced or unheard by engaging in community-relevant topics such as health equity, education, and interracial solidarity. The series brings community members and practicing API artists together, creates a bridge to share ideas, and rewrites dominant representations of APIs.
